14 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Setting Any Goal

working womanAt the beginning of the year, you made plans and set goals for yourself expecting things to automatically change for you. Excited, you started working towards achieving the goals but alas by February, they have been tossed aside, abandoned and you are back at the point where you were at the beginning of the year

You don’t succeed or change just because you wish to, say so or write it down. It doesn’t happen like that. Things don’t automatically change because it is a new year. It takes more. Before you start implementing any plan, you need to review your life and figure out what you are doing or intend to do that that will cause you to succeed in your goals. The good book calls it counting the cost and it is a very important step which a lot of people miss in their haste to accomplishing the goal, then midway they find out that they can’t continue because they couldn’t bear the cost of achieving the goals or the goal is something they no longer want and abandon it. At the end of the day, valuable resources like time, money and energy have been wasted.

We are going into the third month of the year. I encourage you, if you haven’t done so to take some time out and think about all your goals – business, family, relationships, work etc. Sit down, count the cost and plan. Ask yourself the following questions;

  • What does the goal mean to me? How bad do I want it and how is the achievement of the goal going to impact my life?
  • What do I need to do in order to achieve that goal? What habits do I need to start doing or stop doing?
  • Based on my daily routine and actions, can I expect to achieve this goal?What do I need to spend more or less time doing going forward? – A lot of people spend too much time on what is not important.  Do only things that add value to your life
  • What resources do I need?
  • What sacrifices do I need to make? Will it be less time with my family/friends, longer work hours, getting another degree or certification etc? If you want the benefits of something in life, you have to also want the costs.  If you want to lose weight then you have to want the sore muscles. You can’t want the shine without wanting to grind.
  • Are the sacrifices worth the achievement of the goal?
  • Am i willing to do all that is necessary to achieve the goal? If you find yourself always desiring yet nothing happens, then maybe what you actually want is just a fantasy.  Maybe you don’t actually want it at all; because you’re not willing to suffer though the work it’s going to take to achieve it.
  • Will I be satisfied or fulfilled after the achievement of the goal?
  • What does achieving the goal mean for me?
  • Are the people around me helping me or hurting me?The people you surround yourself with play a big part of who you become in life. Don’t hang around people who will bring you down. Decide who you spend the majority of your time with.
  • Am i willing to ignore critics and keep on?
  • Am i willing to keep working towards my goals even when there is no shred of evidence that I’m making progress?
  • Am i willing to be flexible in my approach, even when it means that I may not reach my goal the way that i hoped to?
  • What competing commitments do I have that can distract or stop me from achieving my goals? What am I going to do about those commitments?
