8 Reasons Why Your Social Media Efforts Aren’t Delivering Results & How to Fix Them

Business blogging

Are you wondering why your activities on social media are not giving you the desired results?

Here are 8 common reasons why this happens and how you can turn it around to achieve better results.

#1. You Don’t Have A Social Media Plan

Having a written plan for social media gives you direction and outlines the steps you’ll take to meet your social media goals. Your social media plan should contain the following;

  •  A description of your ideal customer.
  • The top 3 social media platforms where your ideal customers are most likely to be found on social media.
  • Your competitors and how you’ll differentiate yourself from them
  • Design a simple strategy to hold yourself accountable. Will you post content daily, weekly? What type of content? Also include examples of topics you’ll post on the different social media platforms
  • Select and outline the tolls you’ll use to help ease your social media tasks eg scheduling tools like buffer, monitoring tools etc
  • You can contact me here to help you craft a social media plan.

#2. Lack of Clear Written Goals

The first question I usually ask my clients is, what are your goals for social media? This is because a lot of entrepreneurs have generic goals like – make more sales rather than specific goals such as sell 50 shoes monthly. You can’t measure your progress if you don’t have goals.

I have a post on important social media goals you should be setting for your business. Click here to read it.

So if you’re sharing content on social media networks without a clearly defined end goal, then your efforts are likely being wasted. Any marketing that you do for your business, you need to ask yourself – What specific outcomes do I want to achieve?

#3 Unrealistic Expectations

Social media is not a get rich quick scheme. It’s not a magic wand you wave and you immediately make sales. Marketing on social media takes time which is why you need to make sure your expectations are realistic when setting your goals, drafting your strategy and timeline for when you expect to start seeing results.

It’s very unlikely that you’ll attract a trailer load of customers immediately. See social media marketing as a long term strategy to build awareness for your business, attract leads and eventually generate sales.

#4. Measuring the Wrong Things

A lot of entrepreneurs who use social media to promote their business usually fall into the trap of focusing on vanity metrics such as number of likes and followers. Dear entrepreneurs, you should focus more on measuring the impact of your social media efforts on your business. Are you getting leads and making sales from social media? If you are, what’s the number? There’s something I always say which is – who likes help?

#5. Treating All Social Media Platforms The Same

The way you would engage on Linkedin is different from Instagram. Many businesses do the same thing on all social media platforms and it affects the results they get from social media. Every social network has its own audience, rules, language and type of content.  For your efforts to be effective, it’s important to learn the rules of engagement and how to create content for the different social media networks.

#6. Not Replying to Comments

Your social media posts should be crafted to elicit comments and questions from your audience. Then when a person responds or asks a question, please reply in a friendly and informal manner, even if the comment is negative. Every comment or question is an opportunity for you to communicate with customers directly.

#7. Making  Your Content All About Selling & Your Business

A mistake many businesses make on social media is making their content on social media all about them —their news, events, their services etc.  Here is the truth: Would you hang out with a person who always talks about himself? You wouldn’t right?

To succeed in social media, you have to tell your audience what they value and want to hear. Make your content for your ideal customers and about them.

#8 Inconsistency

You can’t conquer social media if you aren’t committed to it. If you only post when it is convenient for you then you’re activities won’t yield the desired results. Always remember that inconsistent efforts on social media will only yield you inconsistent results.

Social media is a very effective marketing tool but you need to use it the right way consistently to see results. Take out time this week to evaluate your efforts to see if you’ve been sabotaging  your social media efforts based on the points raised in this post. If you feel you’ve tried everything but it’s not just working then you need to get expert help.
