A SURE WAY TO GROW YOUR CUSTOMER BASE

TrustEver experienced this? You miss your way and then stop to ask but most people hurry along not evening looking at you because of a lack of trust. After a little hesitation, someone gives you directions and quickly moves on. Trust is valuable and rare. Every society and interpersonal relationship needs trust to develop and thrive. This is especially important for businesses in it’s relationships with customers as trust is the foundation for success and survival. We all have organisations we don’t trust, As a Nigerian, one that comes to mind is our electricity provider. I don’t trust them to supply electricity so I have to make arrangements in case they withhold it. With the rise of social media, bad news and reviews travel very fast. All it takes is for someone to show their displeasure on one of the many social networks and then gbam it starts travelling fast discouraging “would be” customers from doing business with your company.  Trust lost is difficult to regain.   Personally I have discovered that it’s easier for me to close a sale if the prospective client feels I can be trusted. Trust is the reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety of a person or thing. When customers don’t trust you, the following happens;

  • It becomes difficult to get new business due to a negative reputation.
  • You won’t get repeat customers and referrals.  Customer loyalty will decrease.
  • Customers don’t seek you out for advice and it will be difficult to persuade them to follow your recommendations.
  • You miss out on valuable information and feedback from customers that could help your business. Customers won’t open up to you if you’re untrustworthy.
  • You loose potential advocates for your business. When customers trust you, they tell their friends, family and become your biggest defenders in the event of negative publicity.
  • Customers don’t give you the benefit of doubt. People are more understanding and forgiving when they trust you and this comes in handy in difficult situations with suppliers or even something as little as when you’re running late for a meeting.

So how can you earn their trust?

  • Offer a quality product or service.
  • Show them you know what you’re doing. Develop a high level of competence.
  • Be honest in your dealings with customers.
  • Treat them with respect.
  • Be genuinely interested in your customers. People want to be treated special. When customers feel good, they will brag about your product or service to everyone including family and friends.
  • Answer complaints and enquiries promptly. There’s nothing as annoying as keeping people waiting unnecessary. If you can’t get back to them immediately, let them know when it will be possible and keep to it.
  • Help your customers save time. For example, if you can give your clients a manicure while they wash their hair, do it. Don’t make them wait until they are done with their hair before you start with the manicure.
  • Look for ways to simplify your business. Remove anything that hinders the customer experience. It may be the process of buying your product or service, features of the product or services, delivery of the products or services etc
