Avoid Attracting The Wrong Customers

attractingWhat’s worse than not having customers? Attracting the wrong customers.

The kind of customers you attract play a huge role in the success of your business. The wrong customers will give you a lot of headache. In my experience, they are usually very price sensitive, and would expect you to give them heaven and earth for nothing. They don’t see the value of your product/service. The wrong customers will give you a lot of customer services issues. They may not be able to use the product/service because it is not for them. You’ll waste your time and lose money trying to please them. Most importantly you may lose the joy of working or running your business.

I’ve had my own share of bad customers and my experiences made come to the conclusion that not every business is good business.  It is better and more profitable to attract the right customers to your business.

Attracting The Right Customers (Plus Free Worksheet)

1, To attract the right customers, you need to identify who your ideal customers is. You cannot attract who you don’t know. What kind of customers does your business need? Don’t say anyone who needs—— instead be specific about the kind of customers you need or want.  A simple tip that will help you, is to describe someone you know who fits the profile of your target customers. If you don’t know anyone, don’t worry, just make up a profile.

I have included a free worksheet that will help you easily identify your target/ideal customers. The worksheet will not only help you identify them but also describe and understand your target customers.  Get it here.

Once you have identified who they are, you can now craft strategies to attract them. For example, giving a discount may not be valuable to your customers but you wouldn’t know that if you don’t know what motivates them to buy your product/services. You can also use the information to improve your product/services.

2, Let people Know the kind of customers you want when you promote your service/product. For example- ‘Are you a singer looking to improve your singing? If you are serious about investing in your craft, contact me’ Be clear on who you are looking to attract based on what it is you offer.

3, Brand yourself in a way that appeals to your target customers. You may be attracting the wrong customers because of how you have branded yourself or the quality of your branding. For you to effectively brand yourself, you have to identify and understand your target audience (which is my first point in this post).  Get the worksheet here

If you do the above, you will start to appeal more to, and attract the right customers. I’ll love to hear from you. What are you doing to ensure you only attract the right customers? Let me know in the comments.
