Discover How The Law Of Reciprocity Can Increase Your Sales

law of reciprocityHave you ever felt the urge to do something nice for someone who helped you? You take note of the gesture and then look for ways to return the favor. Have you liked a stranger’s Facebook post or Instagram picture because they liked yours? I have and I’m sure you have because it’s human nature. What’s at work is something, Dr. Robert Cialdini, a renowned psychologist calls Law of Reciprocity.

Law of Reciprocity refers to responding to a positive/negative action with another positive/negative action. Let’s focus on the positive-which would mean that when someone does something nice for you, you will feel compelled to do something nice in return. You may even do something far more generous than what was done to you.

Using This In Your Business

You can apply this principle in your business by giving something free and of value to your customer that they would really appreciate. Go one step further and don’t ask that they do or give anything back in return. When you do this, you are activating the law of reciprocity in your business. You can never go wrong with giving. Give and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full.

What Can You Give That People Will Value?

When I say people, I’m referring to both prospects (people you want to make customers) and present customers. Ok let’s dive into practical applications in your business. There are so many ways you can apply this but here are some basic ways;

  • Give out valuable information that is not readily available to your customers/prospect
  • Give lower prices or special deals for a specific period of time
  • Give free samples of your products or offer a free trial of your services
  • Offer something exclusive
  • Throw a party or an event for your customer
  • Give out accompanying gifts along with your products or services

When you use the law of reciprocity this way in your business, you will achieve the following;

  • Gain the trust of your prospects (people you want to make customers) and present customers.
  • Establish your credibility with your target market
  • You are showing your customers who you are and what you value. You are showing them you keep to your word, value high quality, understand their needs, value them, their business and their attention. A lot of people appreciate these qualities and they will most likely respond with their business or referrals
  • Your customers will like you and people buy from people or organizations they like

Do not try to use this to deceive your customers. That will be using the law wrongly and it will back fire in the long run. If you use this law to trick someone into buying something that is not of value to that person. You have sold your service/product but you have lost a repeat customer or referral. Reciprocity is a powerful force that can make or break your business depending on how you use it but I trust you will use it the right way.
