How to Be More Productive and Avoid the ‘Busy’ Trap

Always busyHarsh as it may sound, there is no reward for just being busy. Your busyness has to be producing something. Productivity is what’s rewarded not just activities.  Yes doing a lot of activities can give you a rush or thrill. At the end of the day, you feel good or important with yourself saying “men I worked today oh, i was so busy.” But ask yourself what did those activities accomplish for me? Everything I did today, was it worth the effort and time I put into it?

If you take a look around, you will see a lot of busy people, always in a hurry to someplace yet often arriving late. You will see busy people who always have one meeting, conference, social event to attend, email to send or work to do. They are always doing something and have little or no time for themselves and their family. But it’s all an illusion because if you look closely, their lives are falling apart. There is no progress. Please don’t be that kind of person.

There are times in life when you will be busy and have a lot of activities to do in a day. Everyone will experience those periods but it shouldn’t be a regular occurrence. Always being busy is a bad thing and most times it happens because you don’t know how to prioritize, manage your time, live within your means or say no to unproductive activities.

Being unnecessarily busy is a trap. It makes you feel important, alive or useful but in the long run, those feelings won’t bring you fulfillment. So you will keep adding more and more activities to your plate to sustain the feelings yet you have not made any real progress. Instead live a life of purpose, doing things that matter to you. Delegate or say no to things or ideas that don’t matter even if they sound or feel good. Don’t while away time with unproductive activities, instead strive to be productive in every area of your life.

I would like to hear your thoughts about this. Please share in the comments. Thanks

    Hi,
I was also feeling the pinch of being busy , mostly for social acceptance and popularity. Only one activity gave me my income , my mentoring service for Small and Medium Enterprises. There are occasions I lost opportunities due to unproductive social pressures to attend functions.
Now I am going to cut many of them and concentrate more on my ‘Business’.
    Thanks for sharing this blog.
