Evaluating Your Friendships – 9 Steps

re evaluateIt’s important to cultivate great friendships. They shape who you are and act as a great support system especially when you are down. To cultivate great friendships, you have to know the kind of friends you have in your life at the moment. So how can you analyze your friendships? I was thinking about this recently when i remembered something regularly used in sales/marketing called the customer profile and an idea dropped about a good way of evaluating friendships.

You see in business, there’s a tendency to focus your attention and energies on the loudest customers but these customers may not be your target market and may be adding little or nothing to the business. Some customers are more valuable than others and successful businesses identify these customers, build relationships with them and look for ways to attract similar new customers.
The way to identify them is through a customer profile. You profile your existing customers using information gotten from them either through surveys, your website or physically asking them. Customers are a valuable source of information.

If you sell to individual customers, you might want to know their age, gender, income etc. For businesses you might want to know the industry they operate in and their size. This type of profile is called a demographic profile. You should also try to find out what they think about you and your business, what they like/dislike, believe and what interests them. Find out what product/service attributes they value most e.g. do they want the lowest possible price, dedicated service or high quality/ exclusive products? Why did they choose to patronize you? This is called the psycho-graphic profile.

After profiling, you group and analyze. Analyzing helps to identify your most profitable, valuable customers and focus on them. You are also able to fine-tune your product/service and marketing activities to meet customers needs thus making your business more efficient.

Back to evaluating friendships. The same way you evaluate customers, you should profile your friendships and other relationships in your life so that you can determine the kinds of people you have in your life presently. To do this you can apply the demographic profile with the following steps:

friends
• Know the types of people in your life. What kind have you been attracting? Are they loafers, people who add value, fair weathered friends, detractors or toxic friends?
• Identify the types of people in the majority.
• How did you meet this majority and where? Do the same for the minority.
• Decide the kind of people you want in your life. Choose people who share the same values with you, who bring out the best in you, people who have your back, challenge you to grow/excel, who tell you the truth and are there for you when you need them.
• If you are unsatisfied with the types of people in your life then you should think about how you have been behaving and dressing. Think about what you have been saying and where you have been going etc. In essence what have you been doing to attract those people?
•Change the behaviors that attract the wrong people into your life and establish new ones.

•Determine behaviors that are unacceptable. Don’t feel obligated to remain friends with people who aren’t good for you.

•Weed out friends who drain you, make you feel inferior, who are the source of your problems, people who you always feel the need to impress, critical, who take and never give back among others.

• If someone regularly does things that bother you greatly, cut them loose, or limit contact. Now i don’t mean cutting off a friend who does just one thing to annoy you. Remember nobody is perfect.

Be careful who you let into your life. Go through your friends one by one and decide if you value the friendship. You will be better for it.
