How To Get Fired Up And Stay Motivated

Get Motivated

I love this quote by Zig Ziglar “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing that’t why we recommend it daily.” When we start out achieving our goals, we are excited, passionate, on fire, ready for anything but midway through we become tired, discouraged or complacent. Remember how you felt when you just graduated from school or just started a new job, when you started your business, just got a dream/idea or just got married? It may even be simple tasks like cleaning the house but halfway you lose steam. Even the most determined person including me sometimes struggle to stay motivated. The pressure and demands of life take their toll sapping your energy and desire. If this keeps on, over time you’ll either give up or find the motivation to work harder, do more, improve and succeed.

Staying motivated is key to succeeding in every area of your life. It begins and ends with you. You need to understand how to get and stay motivated otherwise your dreams will weaken until they become mere wishes. So for those times when you don’t feel motivated. Here are some ideas I’ve found helpful in my life.

• Write down your goals or tasks before hand. I recently started doing this and it has helped a lot in motivating me. This is because i can always go back and read it whenever i’m discouraged. Even God tells us to write the vision and make it plain. Aside from writing, you can also put up pictures, illustrations, scriptures or statements that support your goals.

• Find good reasons for the task or goals as they will help you stay motivated. Ideas for a good reason can be material reward, personal gain, feeling of accomplishment, your doing it for your loved ones, God’s work etc.

• Remind yourself regularly about your goals and why you want to accomplish them. Sometimes we lose sight of our goals so it’s good to always keep the end result in mind. Also keep track and check your progress. If you see that you are lagging behind on your goals, that may just be the push to get you back on track. If you are not behind, then recognise your progress by rewarding yourself. Do something nice and enjoyable eg buy something, give yourself a treat, go to the cinema etc. You will feel good.

Get fired up
• Don’t procrastinate. Eliminate distractions, break down your tasks/goals into smaller pieces and hold yourself accountable to completing them step by step. Try different approaches. There is more than one way to accomplish your goals.

• Make it fun. Look for ways to enjoy what you’re doing and make it fun for others if you’re in a team eg singing or listening to music while working. Most tasks have the potential to be enjoyable even if you hate what you are doing.

  • Ask for help when you need it. I used to find it difficult asking for help because i felt it showed i wasn’t capable enough, but after burning out i realised it is very necessary. You see we sometimes overestimate our abilities but no one can handle everything on their own. You need people but please be selective about who you tell and ask for help.
  • Take a break. You may be burning yourself out and a break is just the thing you need.
  • Don’t dwell on failure just accept it, learn from it and move on.
  • Stay positive. Stop complaining. Even when things are looking down, be positive and expectant. Commit your work to God then what you’ve planned will take place but what you are doing should be in line with God’s word.
  • Watch, read or listen to inspirational material. Let people motivate you.
  • Learn how to handle criticism well. Sometimes when we are criticized we tend to become discouraged, pull back and start giving up but we shouldn’t allow it discourage us. Develop a thick skin to destructive criticism aimed at pulling you down.

Is there any other thing that motivates you? Let me know in the comments. Thanks.
