Is This Excuse Holding You Back From Pursuing Your Dreams?

sadChildren, especially toddlers, are insanely curious. When they enter a place they go off exploring every inch of it. They are unafraid to walk into rooms and open doors even in unfamiliar houses. They also ask lots of questions and watch you closely then mimic what you do.

We were all like this once, but lost our sense of adventure and curiosity somewhere along the line between childhood and adulthood. Growing up, you are told not to explore without permission. You are told implicitly or explicitly that you should be wary of doing new things or going to places when there’s no one to take you there. You also gradually learn stop asking questions.

This dearth of curiosity manifests itself in many ways in adulthood, and you find that you feel uneasy going to places if you don’t know anyone there. You also discover that you always need someone to follow you, when you need to go somewhere, or get something done. Some people see this as “having connections”.  In Nigeria, this “connection thingy” is very pronounced. You have to know someone in a place before you can go there and if you don’t, you stay put. One question a lot of Nigerians would ask you, when you want to apply for a job or approach a company/someone for business is, do you know anyone there or do you know him/her? If you don’t, you are encouraged to find someone who knows the person or knows people there before going and if you don’t find anyone, don’t attempt it.

So many people are at a standstill in life because of this. Whatever happened to the sense of adventure you had as a child? There’s nothing wrong in having connections in different places or knowing a lot of people, and using it to your advantage. There’s also nothing wrong with doing things with people, but when not knowing anyone becomes a hindrance and an excuse for not pursuing your goals, then it is wrong.

Don’t wait until you have a connection or there are guaranteed results before doing things or taking risks. You may feel uncertain, and yes you risk rejection, criticism and may have to start over if you fail. Don’t focus on that, instead look at what you stand to gain. A lot of times you focus more on what might go wrong, than what might go right, or what you stand to gain. You know what, the risk of something going wrong is not as high as is often estimated. So focus on what you stand to gain and what it will cost you if that risk is not taken, and let it motivate you to step out of your comfort zone.

Next thing you should do is prepare and plan. Ask yourself, what is the worst thing that can happen? Then decide and prepare for what you will do in those situations. Don’t underestimate your ability to handle the situation, the consequences of taking the risk and stepping out of your comfort zone. Don’t doubt yourself and your abilities. You can do it. You can handle what comes out of it.

So stop waiting for someone to help and start pursuing opportunities that will take you closer to your goals.
