The Cost of Overworking Yourself

sleepSleep is important to your well-being. One major reason why a lot of people deprive themselves of sleep is because they overwork themselves. The cost of overworking yourself outweighs the benefits. It negatively affects your relationships, health, career/business and faith walk. For example, there is the tendency to skip meals or not eat at all the whole day. Then you start depending on sugary drinks, caffeine, chewing gum and sweets to keep you awake and alert. This can affect your health in the long run.

Overworking yourself isn’t worth it. Experience they say is the best teacher. I learnt the hard way some years back when I suddenly started shaking and collapsed on the road from exhaustion while on a sales call. Thankfully my team members where with me and rushed me home. That incident scared me and made me decide to take responsibility for my health. Your faith, family, health, relationships are just as important as your job/business. Don’t neglect them.

In order to meet a deadline, manage a crisis or finish a project/very important task, you would sometimes need to put in extra hours, but it shouldn’t be something you do on a regular basis. This is not easy especially if you work for someone or a company that requires you to regularly put in long hours, coupled with time spent in traffic but think about this, if your health, family life/relationships and faith breaks down, you will not be productive at work. If your health is affected, you may not even be able to work at all. So as much as you can, take breaks and short naps during the day. Also take advantage of your weekends to sleep and rest.

If you are one of those people who think that you do just fine with less than 5 hours of sleep regularly?  The Wall Street Journal reports that for every 100 people who think they’re a member of this “elite group,” only five can actually pull off sleeping less than five or six hours a night without their performance suffering.

Success (in life and even at work) is not the result of the amount of time you put in at work. Always keep that in mind. Also remember that the choices you make today largely determines your quality of life tomorrow. So make a decision now to rest well.
