What Are You Selling?

Sell yourselfEveryone is selling something. They just haven’t realized it yet. If you think you have to be in the sales or marketing department before seeing yourself as a salesman, you’re wrong. Whenever you want someone to do something for you, you’re selling. Some examples a job interview, you trying to get someone’s attention or asking for a date, trying to get a driver to allow you into his lane, telling your friend about that interesting movie you watched, telling your child why they need to do their homework before playing or getting your boss to give you permission to leave the office.

The number one thing we sell is ourselves. To succeed in life you need people. No man is an island. You need friends, people to do business with you, hire you, work with you, refer you, work for you or help you. At work you need to sell yourself well to get promoted and if you don’t have a job yet, you’ll need to sell yourself to get one. As a business owner/entrepreneur you are not only selling products or services, you’re selling yourself too knowingly or not.

Everyday we interact with people who assess and form opinions about us whether we like it or not. I know people like to say “you don’t know what is in my heart” as a defence of their behaviour and they are right. No one can see your heart so they will assess you based on what can be seen which is your dressing and character. So who you are and what you do are very important.

Since we all sell and the skill is a necessity for success in life. It makes sense to be aware of and learn how to sell. Doesn’t it? It does so here are some tips to selling yourself effectively that I’ve learnt through observation and experience:

  • Know yourself. Your values, strengths, accomplishments, weaknesses, qualities etc.
  • Believe in yourself and your abilities. This makes you confident. It’s difficult to convince people if you are not convinced yourself.
  • Be the best you can be. Meet or exceed expectations.
  • Cultivate trust in people. You do this by being honest, helpful and thoughtful.
  • Be positive. Smile it costs nothing.

Everyone sells

  • Learn to understand people by listening to them, observing their body language and putting yourself in their shoes
  • Ask yourself this question. Are my clothes appropriate for the image i want to project? If it’s not, you need to change them.
  • Don’t do anything that will cause you to be ashamed later.
  • Learn how to express your thoughts and feelings effectively.
  • Show interest in people. This will make you more likeable.
  • Consciously develop quality relationships
  • See opportunities rather than failure. Also learn from your actions.
  • Be patient, determined and learn to take risks.

You are your most valuable asset so learn to project yourself well. Please share your comments.
